Is a coffee pod machine the answer for me?

Looking at your options for coffee machines and not sure if a pod machine is the way to go?

Well here's some info that may help...

Types of pods available

Pods are essentially pre-portioned and packaged serves of coffee, usually individually wrapped. Like whole bean coffee, these are available in a vast array of blends to suit a wide variety of tastes.

There are a couple of different pod solutions available. Some use the ESE (Easy Serve Espresso) Pod system, which is a generic standard, and others have unique systems that then tie you into buying their brand of coffee. Personally I'm a fan of the ESE Coffee Pod system as it gives you a choice of coffee providers (many major roasters has ESE Pods available).

Types of ESE Pod machines

There are typically two types of espresso machine that will accept ESE pods.

1. Coffee machines that are purpose built to be pod machines

2. Espresso machines with a conversion kit to accept ESE Pods.

The advantage of the second type is that you can convert your machine to a traditional espresso machine using ground coffee at any stage.

Some users of pod machines go onto using a full manual machine so that they control the full range of variables in making the perfect espresso... this is good to keep in mind if you're wanting to maximise the lifespan of your equipment.

Who should get a pod machine?

A pod machine is ideal where you want to avoid having to grind coffee or deal with the ground coffee, particularly if you don't want to resort to an automatic machine.

Pod machines are also useful where you want to have the option of converting to a full manual machine down the track without having to change your equipment.

For the smaller office or those in more remote locations, the fact that pods are typically individually wrapped and nitrogen flushed (to stay fresh), makes it easier to avoid having stale coffee, ensuring fresh tasting coffee every time.
